Learn about Vero

Vero Beach deserves its name as “Gem of the Treasure Coast.” Rarely does there exist such a charming combination of tropical beauty, delightful climate, and cultural amenities.

Located on Florida’s east coast about 90 miles from Orlando International Airport and about 70 miles from  Palm Beach Airport, Vero Beach is close enough to major transportation hubs to be easily accessible, but far enough away from the crowds and traffic of Florida’s major cities to have maintained its character as a peaceful refuge. The beachside community of the barrier island offers 23 miles of pristine, un-crowded beaches, neighborhood parks, streets canopied by ancient oaks, and charming shops and restaurants. Enjoy nourishing sea breezes during a walk along the Boardwalk or dive in for a swim in the temperate ocean. Visit the Vero Beach Museum in Riverside Park or kayak along the Indian River Lagoon in the company of egrets, herons, dolphin, and manatee.

Vero Beach is known as the gateway to the tropics. It is here that the semi-tropical area of the United States with its lush vegetation and warm sunny weather begins. The climate is moderated by the proximity of the Gulf Stream which runs approximately 15 miles to the east. The annual average temperature is 74 degrees.

Indian River County is a boater’s paradise. The Indian River Lagoon which separates the barrier island from the mainland is home to beautiful birds, fish, manatee and dolphins-the perfect spot for kayaking, or motoring around the tropical island which line the Intracoastal Waterway. Fort Pierce Inlet to the south and Sebastian Inlet to the north offer easy access to the ocean and the Bahamas which are just 80 miles away. Indian River County is also well known for its many excellent golf courses. There are 6 public courses, including Sandridge Municipal Golf Course which has won acclaim as one of the best municipal course in the country, and 12 private courses. The north end of the island features three exclusive gated communities which integrate the beautiful open space of their private golf courses into the residential site plan.

Perhaps because of its extraordinary natural beauty, Vero Beach has become well known for its protection of natural resources. One third of the land is held by the county, much of it in parks and preserved open space. 58% of the barrier island is dedicated to parks, beaches and other open space. Building densities are much lower here than in much of Florida. County regulations now restrict building heights to 3 stories. The county is home to The Environmental Learning Center and McKee Gardens which are dedicated to preserving the beauty of Indian River County.
